Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 18, 2027, the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service. Schools, clubs, companies and neighbors use it for one-day projects: food drives, park cleanups, care kits. A shift sign-up sheet tells you who is coming, when, and who is bringing what.

Projects that fit into one morning
Sorting at a food bank or pantry. Call ahead: many limit group sizes and fill their MLK Day slots early.
A park, trail or schoolyard cleanup. The parks department may lend grabbers and bags and pick up the full bags.
Care kits for a shelter: hygiene kits, warm socks, snack packs. Ask the shelter what they actually need first.
Cards for seniors or hospital patients, a good project for families with young kids.
A book drive for a school or a little free library.
Plan it four to six weeks ahead
Pick a partner organization and ask how many volunteers they can host, the minimum age, and what to bring.
Split the day into roles and shifts: check-in, setup, two service shifts, cleanup, and a supply run.
Share one link and ask volunteers for an email, so they get a reminder the day before.
Expect a few no-shows. Sign up 10 to 20 percent more people than you need; extra people join the waitlist and move up automatically if someone cancels.
Collect supplies on the same sheet
Add slots like "20 pairs of socks" or "travel-size toothpaste (10)". People sign up for what they will bring, so you don't end up with forty toothbrushes and no soap.
Find a project near you
AmeriCorps, which leads the day nationally, lists volunteer opportunities on its website. Local volunteer centers and United Way chapters often post projects too.
