New Year’s Eve potluck: who brings what, plus a plan for midnight
Thursday, December 31, 2026 · Start organizing by December 10
New Year’s Eve is Thursday, December 31, 2026. A potluck at home is the easiest way to see the year out with friends: everyone brings one thing, and the host is not cooking all day. Share one list so you get food that lasts until midnight, enough drinks, something alcohol-free, and a few people who stay to help clean up.
Dates are for planning. Schools, workplaces and cities sometimes move them, so check locally. Dates checked October 2026

Plan food that lasts until midnight
New Year’s Eve parties run long, so grazing food works better than one big dinner. For about 12 guests:
4 or 5 appetizers and finger foods for the first hours
2 hearty dishes around 9 or 10 pm (chili, a pasta bake, sliders)
2 desserts
1 late-night snack for after midnight
Ask people to write what they are bringing in the note, so you can spot five dips early.
Drinks for the whole night
Something sparkling for the midnight toast, and an alcohol-free option for everyone who wants it
More ice than you think you need
Coffee or tea for the people driving home later
Agree on rides home before the party starts: who is driving, and who is taking a taxi or rideshare.
Countdown extras
Hats, noisemakers, a playlist and a screen showing the countdown. Families with young kids often do an early countdown at 8 or 9 pm, timed to midnight somewhere else in the world.
Cleanup
Put three people on the cleanup slot. They are the reason the host still enjoys New Year’s Day.
Questions
How much food do I need for a New Year’s Eve potluck?
For about 12 guests: 4 or 5 appetizers, 2 hearty dishes for later in the evening, 2 desserts and one late-night snack. Set the number of each on the sheet and it closes when it is full.
Should guests chip in for drinks?
If you are buying the bubbly or the ice, you can turn on chip-in and suggest a small amount. Guests pay you directly with your own payment app.
How do I avoid everyone bringing chips?
Give each slot a limit. When appetizers are full, the next person has to pick something else.
